The Challenges and Advantages of using LTI for your LMS content

In this article we're going to address the cool things LTI can do, and the things it can't!

Hello, fellow readers! We know technology can be pretty daunting - new updates, releases, features and even drawbacks! We understand that you're doing your best out there, and we're here to offer you honest information to help empower your journey. 😀

First, let's talk about the challenges you might face when considering the use of LTI.

Before you begin to make a switch, check to make sure your LMS supports LTI.

Some  LMSs like Google Classroom and Microsoft Teams don't support the LTI standard at all. While it's rare for us to see users who are on these systems, it's worth mentioning!

However, if your LMS is LTI compliant, we can most definitely work with you!

Currently, our most common LMSs are Blackboard and Canvas!

Did you know, you can find out if your LMS is LTI compliant simply by searching, "Is 'insert your LMS name here' LTI compliant"?

Each LMS Will Look Different When Using LTI.

While this isn't necessarily a challenge, it is important to keep in mind!

If you take a look at our Help Center, you'll notice we happen to have different sections for Canvas, Blackboard and Moodle.

The reason for this is due to the fact that LTI responds differently depending on which platform you use. However, once it's set up, you're essentially good to go!

But, do keep in mind that the experience of a Blackboard user will always look different to one on Canvas.

What can LTI offer you? Security!

Compared to SCORM, LTI Advantage is still being updated and supported. This means, by using LTI advantage, you are keeping your information safe with the best security.

Compared to previous versions of LTI, LTI advantage offers an extra step of security which has both Interplay and your LMS confirm information and security before connecting!

If you'd like a more technical understanding, this security feature adopts modern security OAuth 2.0 and JSON Web Tokens (JWT)  and adopts OpenID Connect (OIDC).

No middle man.

For some of you who are on LTI 1.1, you still have a "middle man," also known as our SCORM download page. Users who utilize this page are usually on SCORM, or LTI 1.1.

For those of you who are familiar with the page below, this means you're on SCORM or LTI 1.1

When it comes to LTI Advantage, the page above is no longer necessary. Instead, your system will be integrated with Interplay!
